Have Paddle, Will Travel: The Life of a Pickleballer

Packing your bag for the Caribbean? Paddle: Check. Court shoes: Check … Pickleball is fast becoming a way to develop instant community for travellers.

”Pickleball helps you forge friendships wherever you travel,” says Gary Schwartz, the president of the Caribbean Pickleball Federation, based out of Curacao an island in the Dutch Antilles. “We predict that there will be a pickleball court in every hotel and cruise ship port-of-call over the next two years.”

Pickleball has become as ubiquitous across Canada, US and is growing in the Caribbean. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, the number of participants has increased by a staggering 39.3 percent over the past two years, with approximately 4.8 million players worldwide. This game's allure extends beyond its reputation among older adults, captivating players of all ages with its fast-paced volleys and inclusive community spirit.

During the pandemic, pickleball emerged as a lifeline, providing a socially distanced yet competitive outlet for many. Its travel-friendly nature makes it an ideal sport for exploring new Caribbean destinations while connecting with locals. Pickleball acts as a conversation starter, creating opportunities to gather local insights and recommendations from fellow players. Whether you engage in a quick game at a public court or join a tournament while on vacation, pickleball opens doors to a vibrant community wherever you go.

With nearly 10,000 pickleball locations across the United States alone, finding a court has never been easier. As a traveler, all you need to pack is your paddle, as pickleballs are typically available locally. The lightweight and compact nature of pickleball equipment make it a hassle-free addition to any travel bag. Public courts and drop-in sessions are often free or inexpensive, making pickleball a more accessible option compared to other sports.

Recognizing the sport's growing popularity, the travel industry has embraced pickleball, offering dedicated courts and programs at hotels, resorts, cruise ships, and even tour companies. Many hotels now consider pickleball a must-have amenity, boasting rooftop courts, novelty experiences like glow-in-the-dark pickleball, and tournaments for guests. Cruise lines have also added pickleball to their onboard activities, and some resorts offer complimentary play for their guests. Pickleball Trips specializes in organizing travel experiences for enthusiasts, including exciting trips to the Caribbean starting at $3,450.

Beyond the game itself, pickleball fosters meaningful connections among players. The inclusive and supportive community aspect of pickleball makes it easy to meet new people, both locally and while traveling. This sport attracts a diverse range of players, from college athletes to seniors enjoying quality time with their grandkids. The relationships formed on the court often extend beyond the game, contributing to a sense of camaraderie and personal growth.

While luxurious resorts and travel packages offer exceptional pickleball experiences, the essence of the sport lies in the accessible public courts found throughout the Caribbean. Many pickleball enthusiasts embark on exciting road trips, seeking out these public courts and connecting with fellow players along the way. The ability to engage with others is a driving force behind these journeys, resulting in lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. With equipment costs as low as $250, pickleball remains an accessible option for both casual and dedicated travelers.

But Pickleball is not only for the itinerant traveller explained Mr. Schwartz. “It is important that Pickleball has authentic roots in the Caribbean. We are working to make sure that Pickleball is accessible to locals and tourist alike. For every hotel court we hope to have 100s of courts in local schools and community centers.”
